No - laminate has a wood-fiber (HDF) core with a printed, laminated wear layer; vinyl plank has a plastic core and is fully waterproof. Laminate feels harder underfoot but is more sensitive to standing water, which matters if you're near the marsh.
Modern water-resistant laminate handles everyday kitchen spills just fine. We still don't recommend standard laminate right next to sinks or dishwashers.
AC4 laminate typically runs 15-20 years in residential use; AC5 commercial-grade can push past 25. The wear layer can't be sanded or refinished - once it wears through, the plank gets replaced.
